Auto Safety Recall Announced: Defective Side Air Bags in Nissan, Toyota, Honda, Mazda & Other Vehicles By Tod Aronovitz | 04/22/13 | 0 Comment

A number of automakers have recalled almost 1.3 million vehicles in the United States for defective side air bag inflators which may rupture incorrectly and injure passengers. The announcement is part of a worldwide product recall involving more than 3 million cars with faulty passenger-side frontal air bags.

The air bags were manufactured by Japanese auto supplier Takata Corporation, who determined inflators in certain bags supplied to various vehicle manufacturers may produce extreme internal pressure. This condition may force the inflator to rupture when deployed causing metal to potentially strike and injure passengers or other occupants in the car. The recall addresses both original and replacement air bags.

The recall includes:

  • Nissan North America, Inc.
Nissan model year 2001-2003 Maxima, Pathfinder and Infiniti I35; model year 2002-2003 Infiniti QX4; model year 2003 Infiniti FX35 and FX 45; and possibly certain Sentra vehicles. Owners may contact Nissan Customer Service at 1-800-647-7261.
  • Toyota & GM
Certain model year 2002 through 2004 Toyota Corolla, Corolla Matrix, Sequoia, Tundra, Lexus SC, and Pontiac Vibe (which was made alongside Toyota’s Corolla). Toyota and Lexus owners may contact Toyota at 1-800-331-4331. Pontiac Vibe owners may contact GM at 1-800-521-7300.
  • American Honda Motor Co.
Certain model year 2001-2003 Civic, model year 2002-2003 CR-V, and model year 2002 Odyssey. The safety recall will begin on May 11, 2013. Owners may contact Honda automobile customer service at 1-800-999-1009. Honda’s recall campaign number is S95.
  • Mazda North America Operations
Certain model year 2003-2004 Mazda6 vehicles manufactured January 14, 2003, through May 29, 2003; and 2004 RX-8 vehicles manufactured June 25, 2003, through June 30, 2003. The safety recall will begin in May 2013. Owners may contact Mazda Customer Assistance Center at 1-800-222-5500, option #6. Mazda’s recall campaign number is 6913D.
  • BMW
The German manufacturer used the same air bag inflators in some of its cars, according to a document Takata sent to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. BMW is currently working to find out which vehicles might have the airbags.

Owners will be notified of the safety recall. Dealers will inspect vehicles, and where a defective air bag inflator is identified, the inflator will be replaced, free of charge. Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
