Hit-and-Run Driver in Fort Lauderdale Pedestrian Death Turns Himself In By Tod Aronovitz | 09/12/14 | 0 Comment

Marvin Devon Permenter, who apparently panicked after hitting a pedestrian in Fort Lauderdale with his car and then fled the scene, turned himself in to authorities on Wednesday. The 31-year old Pompano Beach driver has since been charged with leaving the scene of a hit-and-run crash involving a death, according to a September 11 report in the Sun-Sentinel.

The story said that Permenter hit the pedestrian while driving in the 5900 block of North Federal Highway on Monday night. The victim was transported to Broward Health Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Witnesses were able to provide a description of the vehicle Permenter was driving—a 2014 silver Chevrolet Cruze—which was discovered abandoned in a nearby neighborhood. According to a police affidavit, the car sustained heavy hood damage and had blood on the broken windshield and bumper.

After voluntarily surrendering to police, Permenter was being held in the Broward Main Jail on $10,000 bond. The victim’s identity has not been released yet. Investigators are waiting for fingerprint analysis results to confirm his identification.

In June, the Florida legislature passed the Aaron Cohen Life Protection Act.  The new law, which stiffens the hit-and-run penalties for drivers who leave the scene of an accident, imposes a mandatory minimum prison sentence of four years for a driver convicted of leaving the scene of a crash resulting in the death of a person.
