Miami Man Connected to $24 Million Durable Medical Equipment Fraud By Tod Aronovitz | 10/20/14 | 0 Comment

A Miami man who owned and operated Quick Solutions Medical Supplies, Inc., a durable medical equipment (DME) company in Houston, is at the center of an alleged $24 million health care fraud and money laundering scheme.

According to an announcement by the U.S. Justice Department, Angel M. Mirabal was arrested on a previously sealed indictment returned by a grand jury in the Southern District of Florida. The indictment charged the 61-year old with conspiracy to commit health care fraud, conspiracy to commit money laundering of health care fraud proceeds, and 10 substantive money laundering counts.

According to allegations, from April 2010 through July 2013, Mirabel plotted with other durable medical equipment suppliers to submit approximately $24 million in false claims to Medicare. Quick Solutions and others did this by claiming that they provided medical equipment, such as wound care supplies, to Medicare beneficiaries when these items were not actually medically needed nor actually provided.

Many of the Medicare beneficiaries who received DME from Quick Solutions, in reality lived hundreds of miles away in Miami. Mirabal and his co-conspirators allegedly used fraudulent shell companies to launder and disburse the proceeds from the health care fraud scheme.

Investigated by the FBI and HHS-OIG, this case is being was brought as part of the Medicare Fraud Strike Force, under the supervision of the Criminal Division’s Fraud Section and U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida.
