South Florida Woman Paralyzed in Lighthouse Point DUI Car Crash By Tod Aronovitz | 09/30/14 | 0 Comment

An automobile collision so severe that it left a South Florida woman unable to walk was the result of a speeding vehicle driven by an alleged drunk driver who has prior DUI and drug arrests.

According to a recent news story in the Sun-Sentinel, the victim, Kim Smith, was heading to her Pompano Beach home when her SUV was hit, flipped, and struck a tree in the center median of the 4100 block of North Federal Highway.

The driver slamming into her was 29-year old Michael Anguille of Boca Raton. He was arrested and charged with DUI, DUI with serious bodily injury, and DUI with property damage, according a Broward Sheriff’s Office spokesperson.

Deputies reported that Anguille was speeding in his 2013 Nissan Altima in the far left lane before swerving into the center lane and crashing into the rear passenger’s side of Smith’s Ford Explorer Sport. The force of the crash caused Smith’s SUV to spin counterclockwise and slide into the median, before rolling over and hitting a large tree, the spokesperson said.

Both drivers were taken to Broward Health North Medical Center. Smith remains in critical condition but unable to walk. Anguille sustained no serious injuries and was released from the hospital where authorities took him into custody. He was detained at the Broward Main Jail while deputies wait for official DUI test results.

Court records show that Anguille has a pending drug case in Broward from an April arrest on charges of marijuana and cocaine possession. He was also arrested for misdemeanor DUI in May 2011, but refused to submit to a DUI test.

Anguille took that case to trial and was acquitted in October 2012, but had his driver’s license suspended for a year as a result of his refusal to take the DUI test, records from the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV) show. He completed DUI school in October 2011 and substance-abuse treatment in June 2012.

As they continue their investigation, authorities seek the public’s help and want to speak to people who saw the crash but did not stop. If you have any information about the accident, call Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS.
