TOD ARONOVITZ TO MODERATE JAMES OTIS LECTURE SERIES ON THE CONSTITUTION By Tod Aronovitz | 09/11/13 | 0 Comment

Tod Aronovitz is honored to be selected as moderator for the American Board of Trial Advocates’ (ABOTA) James Otis Lecture Series, which will be held in the Lehmann Theatre at Miami-Dade College, North Campus, on Thursday, September 19.

Three years ago, ABOTA created the James Otis Lecture series with the goal of educating students on the history of the U.S. Constitution. The lecture series is held on the week of Constitution Day, which commemorates the Constitutional Convention’s signing of the document on September 17, 1787.

The federal statute formalizing Constitution Day as a holiday requires that all publicly funded educational institutions provide educational programming on the history of the American Constitution on that day. This year, ABOTA is expanding its lecture program to encompass nine states, up from five states in 2012.

Additionally, Miami-Dade County Public Schools and Miami-Dade College North Campus have collaborated to present the lecture series to a larger audience of 600 Miami-Dade honor students this year. The students will travel to the College’s North Campus to hear Miami-Dade judges speak on the history and importance of the Constitution.

The Honorable Ellen Sue Venzer and The Honorable Antonio Arzola, both of the Eleventh Judicial Circuit of Florida, are among the speakers.

The series is named after James Otis, an influential lawyer in colonial Massachusetts. Otis is famously associated with the phrase, “taxation without representation is tyranny.” Otis also challenged the legality of British search and seizure warrants, effectively laying the groundwork for the Fourth Amendment.

ABOTA is a national association of experienced trial lawyers and judges dedicated to the preservation and promotion of the civil jury trial right provided by the Seventh Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. ABOTA works to uphold the jury system by educating the American public about the history and value of the right to trial by jury.
