Toyota Recall of RAV4 Vehicles and Lexus HS 250h Hybrids By Tod Aronovitz | 09/18/13 | 0 Comment

For a second time, RAV4 vehicles for model year 2006 through 2011 and 2010 Lexus HS250h passenger vehicles manufactured from October 2005 through September 2010 are subject to a Toyota recall. Problems in the rear suspension arm of the 780,584 affected vehicles may not have been properly repaired during an initial recall in August 2012.

Emphasizing that this new Toyota recall supersedes Toyota and Lexus recall 12V-373, the car company announced that all vehicles involved in the recall need to be re-inspected and have the updated remedy applied.

The reason for this additional Toyota recall may be that technicians performed a tightening sequence to adjust the rear wheel alignment incorrectly the first time around. If the nuts for adjusting the rear wheel alignment are improperly tightened, the rear suspension arm (rear tire rod) may develop unwanted movement and rust leading to thread damage and eventual failure.

According to Toyota, failure of the rear tire rod will cause an abrupt change in the vehicle’s alignment, which could cause a loss of vehicle control and increase the risk of a crash.

Dealers will inspect the tie rods and replace any that have rust or corrosion on the alignment adjustment threads. All of the rear tie rods will then be encased in an epoxy to prevent future environmental damage.

Toyota plans to notify owners of the recall remedy, which will be launched in stages from September 2013 through February 2014, due to a limitation in the number of necessary parts. All owners will receive a first notification of the recall, followed by a second reminder to most owners, once parts are available in their area.

In the meantime, owners who have any questions or concerns may contact Toyota at 1-800-331-4331 or Lexus at 1-800-255-2987. Owners may also contact NHTSA’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 or go to www.safecar.gov. Reference the NHTSA campaign ID No. 13V383000.
